O trabalho agora plana no devir (…).

Incomum (Uncommon): exploration and experimentation of an investigating artist Before, what I propose is, in fact, to think art. (F. Mendes)
I have known the artist Flaw Mendes for years. Our meeting was marked by a
great desire to know, by shared or co-shared involvements, and by much affection. Even
back then, when we did not suspect we would go through this moment of global
pandemic, health crisis and misgovernment in Brazil, he revealed himself as an artist who
explores languages and a walker along the borders of knowledge: between visual arts and
literature. Flaw Mendes, in the entirety of his work, lets escape – as Georges DidiHuberman puts it – an image on fire, through confrontation and combat, which runs
through his creative process: the strong relationship between writing and drawing, visual
arts and literature, word and image. Artistically, he has an involvement with literature and
the visual arts, according to him, not always separately, "(…) I have dedicated myself
more to the hybrid performance of these languages, not only by choice, but because I
have a very strong drive and enchantment for this symbiosis." (Report to the author, 2019,
our emphasis).
Restless, the artist investigates the word and its meanings, produces poetics when
he joins and/or juxtaposes two or more words: “CaderNinhos” (NoteLittleNests -
Nestbook), “VLer” (SeeRead), “Palavrimagem” (Wordimage), “Acontecência”
(Eventness), “Lapéis” (Paper-wrapped pencils - papencil), for example. It is through the
poetic gesture of mixing, interweaving, gluing, tearing, staining, and sometimes blending
until it becomes uniform – when we no longer recognize authorship, origin, form, totality,
purity – that the artist creates and produces new texts, images, objects, poièses (poiesis).
The concept of hybridism suggests thinking, guides the gaze, toward questioning how
and in what way experiences that involve/bring together different elements, disparate
materials and plural cultures in the same "space/time" occur. The concept operates on the
basis of mixing differences, without thereby making such a mélange homogeneous.
Contemporary art, par excellence, has revealed itself as a privileged field for the
production of hybrid situations. And by adopting this concept/procedure, the artist does
not diminish dichotomies, but exacerbates differences and dissonances. As far as I
remember, in his early works, there was the primacy of the image; sometimes verbal
writing prevailed, and still, both together, communed and amalgamated. It is very
beautiful to look at, retrospectively, at this path of Flaw Mendes's creative experience,
which has resulted in very strong, powerful works. Indeed, his poetics and creative
process are added to and intertwined with other experiences by artists on the
contemporary scene – who make use of the word, writing, discourse, literature, image –
I mention Arnaldo Antunes, Fábio Morais, Mana Bernardes, Marilá Dardot, Mirtha
Dermisache, Rosana Ricalde, William Kentridge, among other intercessors.
Incomum (Uncommon), a series that comes to public exhibition in this show,
accounts, within the larger horizon of its scope, for this way of creating, of inventing and
reinventing possibilities of verler/vler (seeingreading) the ordinary things of the social
world, causing them to be transfigured into extraordinary ones. This process of
metaphorizing and metamorphosing things of the world seems to me to be a brutal
displacement that the visitor to this exhibition undergoes when confronted with these
objects/drawings/paintings. Once again, the artist casts doubt on how we classify what
we see.
Incomum starts from the construction of an ordinary object present in the
experiences and gestures of graphing our passage through the world, giving and endowing
the world with symbolic, poetic, ethical meanings through writing and/or graphic
expression. But not content with using the pencil taken from the circulation of industrial
consumer goods, Flaw composes and creates his object full of sign layers, hybridizing
form and content. That which serves to mark the most diverse spaces and territories now
supports on its outer layers what was previously printed on paper: word/discourse. Once
again, the artist surprises us with the inter-meanings or multiple meanings that Incomum
evokes. Just look: Aperfeiçoamento – Obra originária (Improvement – Original Work)
firstly carries the doubt between being painting, within the tradition of art history
regarding the insertion of objects into pictorial production, and, besides the object, we
still see a color palette ranging from black to its noir gradation. And, emblematically, the
graphite pencil is covered by a layer of paper printed with a fragment of the Golden Law,
in facsimile.
And so the exercise of provoking estrangements, displacements of the gaze, and
denaturalization of identity and political issues is present throughout the exhibition,
whether in these works that alter the discursive meanings of a supposed single narrative
– I mention Aperfeiçoamento – Obra originária, 2019 and Pelourinho (Pillory), Registro
escravos (Slave records), 2018-2020, Territoriografia (Territoriography), 2019/2020, for
example. Or even, in the subtle wake of the estrangements produced by the combination
of various objects and discourses as places of enunciation that interpellate each other,
provoking the broadening of themes imposed by the decolonial, anti-patriarchal, feminist
and anti-racist turn, and also an estrangement provoked by the reduction and increase in
the scale of objects and the displacement of their ordinary uses: Apontador para discurso
perfeito (Sharpener for perfect discourse) and Lápis incomum (Uncommon pencil).
Flaw Mendes, born in the city of Campina Grande, Paraíba, northeast of Brazil,
recognizes himself as a Black Brazilian artist. At this moment – it is worth mentioning
that there are few Black Brazilian artists who work in the artistic field and inhabit the
academy simultaneously, because these spaces are generally constituted by white people,
marked by asymmetrical hierarchies, by whiteness and structural racism – and therefore,
the occupation of his body and his work in this space of power, disputes and tensions is
fundamental for strengthening the anti-racist struggle and resistance for plurality and
diversity in the artistic field.
In this sense, the racial themes present in the Incomum series speak of this artist
who, in common agreement with the decolonial epistemological turn we are experiencing
today, recognizes himself as a Black artist and proposes a debate on the issue of Blackness
in the arts, reminding us of the First World Festival of Black Arts in Dakar (FESMAN,
1966), proposed by Léopold Sédar Senghor, among other references and works by
countless Black Brazilian intellectuals and artists today. Babacar Mbaye Diop, in his book
on the critique of the notion of African art, analyzes Black arts or Black aesthetics. One
of the thinkers analyzed is Léopold Sédar Senghor, who developed an important
reflection alongside Aimé Césaire regarding Negritude. In this vein, producing Black arts
would mean being aware of one's social condition as a Black person. For Senghor, this
philosophical understanding of art is also political and must be understood in the
construction of public cultural policies.
Finally, we are faced with an artist who values the formal rigor of his productions,
who intensely focuses on investigation and experimentation with the materials he uses in
his creative process, who does not separate form and content; on the contrary, he joins,
juxtaposes, and hybridizes. He distances himself from binarisms and sterile classifications
of artistic languages. He is interested in art, in thinking art beyond defined categories. In
his words, he reveals part of his creative process: "(…) Behold, suffering from
impermanence, I was struck by another wind of change, which took me to edges, I became
dressed in syntheses. The work now glides in becoming (…)." (Report to the author,
2019)
The artist produces, through a poetics – a set of questions he intentionally wishes
to work on – of a social, political, cultural and anthropological nature, works that present
themselves to the world in a sophisticated manner and with extreme intelligence and
power. As the artist himself comments: "One must be, to oneself, unknown." Flaw
Mendes is a narrator, creates writings and artist's books/objects. The project "Escrita tupi
ou Escrita Adestrada" (Tupi writing or Tamed writing) – consisting of a set of 'anti-rules',
parameters for weaving a writing with a left-handed perspective as opposed to the righthanded – the result of two years of research, generated, among other works, a book-object
Escrita Tupi Livro (Tupi Writing Book) from 2019 and the recent book entitled Manual
de Lapeis (Paper-wrapped pencil manual) (numbered edition 1/100), where he presents a
fusion of formats/genres (comic book and instruction manual). In this object/book, there
is an overlap of two main narratives. One focuses on the process of artistic creation; the
other shows the step-by-step creation of this object. The artist offers the participants of
his production the 'acontecências' (eventences), exposing the path of creation, traces of
this sometimes unnamable force of creation. In the words of Deleuze, a favorite author of
the artist, "To write is also to become something other than a writer" (Deleuze, 1997, p.
16).
It is very interesting to follow the research of this young artist over these last years
we have been involved, and to perceive his searches, continuities and displacements – as
if one work is born from another and another and so on – the formal rigor, the meticulous
investigation of materials and subject matters, his poetic writing and the power of his
visual/verbal narratives. In addition to his ethical/aesthetic commitment to a Black
epistemology, present in the Incomum series. Such artists are rare among us.
